ACCORDING TO STEVE
Southern Living, Apr 2006 by Bender, Steve
Change frightens many people. So before you seek counseling over this column's new name, let me assure longtime readers and newcomers alike that it will still dispense the same hardhitting, meaty, and mind-numbingly accurate information that has bettered so many millions of lives over the years.
For example, did you know that the Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) doesn't normally flower at Easter? Nope, left to its own devices, it usually blooms in early summer. It flowers at Easter only when treated with chemical growth regulators in climate-controlled greenhouses run by the CIA. Now here's the shocking part (pause for dramatic effect as the music swells): You don't have to throw away your potted lily after Easter! It's the only lily that grows well throughout the South, including South Florida. So after it finishes flowering, plant it in the garden, and it will bloom year after year. Only not at Easter (unless the CIA wants it that way).
