Upcountry Getaway

Southern Living,  Apr 2006  by Thompson, Annette

I'm having a love affair with The Red Horse Inn. Instead of going inside to register, I can't take my eyes off the vista. Bright emerald fields lead to forests at the base of Glassy Mountain, between Greenville, South Carolina, and Asheville, North Carolina.

After being greeted by innkeeper Mary Wolters, my husband and I find all that we want and more. We drive down the gravel road to The Huntbox, one of the five cottages (rates $185-$260). Each of the little bungalows sports a different look. A farm table fills one side of The Huntbox's great room, and a set of comfy chairs takes up the other by a gas fireplace. The full kitchen includes a stocked refrigerator. Relaxing on the porches, reading a book, and soaking in the whirlpool tub appeal to us.

The six suites in the main house (rates $135-$165) include gas fireplaces, luxury baths, and kitchen closets with appliances for preparing breakfast.

Mary and her husband, Roger, planned the inn themselves. "We built a romantic getaway," she says. I think you'll fall in love with it too. -ANNETTE THOMPSON
