Formula for Kitchen Green
Southern Living, Mar 2006
What better way to welcome the arrival of spring than to bring the outdoors into your home? Enjoy the beauty and aroma of fresh herbs grown right in your kitchen.
Welcoming Spring
1 Fresh herbs add a touch of spring to your kitchen as well as fresh flavor to your cooking. Grow your own herbs in planter boxes or small terra-cotta pots. Your local farmer's market or garden store will have a variety to choose from.
2 Keep herbs out of drafts and in a sunny spot, such as your kitchen windowsill. You can arrange them on window-mounted shelves or place them on your kitchen countertop or sunny cabinet shelves for accent color.
3 Infusing oils with savory herbs adds rich flavor and aroma to your cooking. Store your herb-infused oils in decorative glass bottles. You can find them in specialty shops or order them online. Sprigs of dried rosemary, thyme, sage and dill are ideal for use in oils. Leafy herbs, such as basil, tarragon or parsley, can be blanched and puréed in a food processor with a mild oil, such as canola.
4 Cooking with homegrown fresh herbs and herb-infused oils can make even a simple recipe special. Add homegrown sage and parsley to roast chicken, or transform marinara sauce into an aromatic delight with a splash of basil-infused oil. A small amount of dill oil adds a delightful flavor to grilled, sautéed or baked fish.
5 Using oils and herbs in the kitchen means the occasional spill. When it comes to cleaning up greasy, oily messes, Formula 409® All Purpose Cleaner is just the thing. Formula 409® All Purpose Cleaner delivers a powerful clean, leaving a fresh scent and shine that adds a breath of spring to your kitchen.
