Hook, Line, And Dinner

Residents of Louisville eat friedfish sandwiches with great gusto and frequency. We discovered a couple of reasons for the city's high rate offish consumption: the large Catholic population that still enjoys fish on Friday and the plentiful presence of UPS, which makes shipping fresh fish to Louisville easy. Plus, the food at Stan's Fish Sandwich is just plain good.

Owners Lelia and Stan Gentle sell their fresh, hand-cut cod sandwiches Monday through Saturday and have been voted one of the best year after year. "We hand-dip each piece in our crumb coating," explains Lelia. "We use only canola oil to fry the fish, and we make our own tartar and cocktail sauces too.

"I order from Boston Monday morning," she continues. "We'll be eating fish Tuesday night that came off the boat on Monday."

You don't pay for flowers and tablecloths at Stan's, which is one reason the fried-fish sandwich is so affordable. For $4.79 you get a perfectly battered fillet-crunchy on the outside, with a flaky, tender inside-tucked into a terrific hoagie roll. A dinner goes for $5.95, which includes homemade slaw and fries.

"Our other popular sandwich is the shrimp burger," says Lelia. "People love our onion rings and french fries too.
