Southern Living, Nov 2005 by Floyd, John Alex Jr
Dear Friend,
I cannot tell you how proud I am of you and all the people who are helping our friends and neighbors in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana rebuild their lives after the heartache and destruction of Hurricane Katrina. Like you, Time Warner, our parent company, has given generously and has also matched each of our staff's individual contributions. In addition, I am pleased to announce a series of Southern Living Relief Grants that support Habitat for Humanity, America's second Harvest: The Nation's Food Bank Network, and grassroots organizations that are lending aid. What we are facing along the Gulf Coast is something we have never seen in our lifetime, so the need will be long-term. To that end, I encourage you to visit a special part of our Web site, southernliving.com/rebuild, to share your needs and ideas with others. Together we can be part of the greatest gift anyone can give: love through caring and sharing.
Also, don't forget that much of the affected region depends on tourism for jobs. Next month, we will update you on what sites have reopened to visitors. This is especially important because many of the unaffected areas are also being hurt because of the perception that they were part of the destruction.
When we started looking at the best places for breakfast across the South, our staff had strong opinions. Check out their picks starting on page 16.1 put Café Du Monde in New Orleans's French Quarter on my list. At press time, we were told that they would again be open for business by the time you received this issue. I hope they are.The photograph on this page shows three staff members at Café Du Monde. I like to think they are toasting you, the heroes and friends who are committed to rebuilding this great area of the South. Happy Thanksgiving, and I hope to hear from you about your ideas at southernliving. com/rebuild.
Best regards,
