Sippin' in Midway

Southern Living,  Sep 2005

No, this isn't the California wine country of the movie Sideways, but it ain't bad. Just as picture-perfect and without the attitude, Kentucky offers a palate-pleasing taste of the grape at Midway's Equus Run Vineyards just 15 minutes from Lexington.

Red, White, and Riesling

"This is my baby Biltmore," says owner Cynthia Bohn, as she shows off the 6 acres of grapes growing sweeter by the day. She claims Riesling as Equus Run's significant wine-it won two gold medals in California competitions. Some of their other wines include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Vidai Blanc.

Land that once grew tobacco has been reclaimed for growing grapes, and visitors come to taste ($2), to buy (wines range from $10.99 to $22.99), and to enjoy the beauty of the place.

Don't forget to peruse the gift shop, with its local sauces, candies, and wines for sale. You'll find a visor perfect for keeping the late-summer sun at bay. It says, "Got wine?" ($16). Here at Equus Run, you surely do.

Equus Run Vineyards: 1280 Moores Mill Road, Midway, KY 40347; (859) 846-9463, toll-free 1-877-905-2675, or www.equus runvineyards.com. Hours: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
