Hannah Coulter BY WENDELL BERRY (SHOEMAKER & HOARD, $25)
In this novel by Kentucky author Wendell Berry, main character Hannah Coulter's life unfolds like an old map. Readers quickly learn of the death of Hannah's first husband during WWII. Then we fly through 50 years of marriage to her second spouse, Nathan. Along the way, we briefly meet many other people who echo from a deeper history.
There are major landmarks on the map, but we only get to know the entire geography when we venture forth into Port William, the novel's setting. Hannah's memories take us there, to a place where no map can really guide you. A port, by definition, is a place where ships weather storms or unload heavy cargo. Hannah and other characters find harbor at Port William. This novel is much more than one woman's tale. As Hannah says, "Our story is the story of our place." TAYLOR BRUCE
