Rich With Red
Southern Living, Feb 2005 by Clavell, Alicia K
Sometimes going all out with one color is the best approach.
See how a warm shade works wonders in this room.
Some color psychology studies show that red tones can stimulate appetite. Even without the bright walls, it would be easy to work up your hunger in this great new kitchen.
Mixing It Up
Michael Lyons, an architect, designed his Farmers Branch, Texas, kitchen in the same way he prepares recipes-a bit of this, a dash ofthat, and always a touch of red garnish. "My wife, Suzie, and I chose to blend styles such as farmhouse, Country French, Texas regionalism, and Tuscan," says Michael. There's also a mix of materials, including stainless steel countertops, mahogany cabinetry, and a mesquite wood island. "The multicolored fabric for window treatments and chair cushions was used along with the red paint to tie the room together," notes interior designer Betty Glaspy. Touches of red abound on the backsplash, tile insets, and handscraped red oak floor as well.
Fast Furniture Fix
A hutch updated with paint provides a focal point against one wall. Michael changed the look of the piece by substituting wooden shelves for glass ones, but he kept the arched doors. Then he painted the piece red to match the walls and give the illusion of a built-in. For the finishing touch, he applied a wooden appliqué faux-finished with silver paint for a hint of glint.
Sitting Pretty
Suzie's one major request in the design process was an alcove off the kitchen. The built-in cabinets with fabric-covered doors provide hidden storage, while comfy seating makes it a perfect place to do work, pay bills, study recipes, and write letters. "Really, I think she just wanted a place to sit and relax while I prepare dinner," says Michael with a laugh. ALICIA K. CLAVELL
