Countdown to Christmas

Southern Living,  Dec 2004

TURN ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE ACCESSORIES INTO A KID-FRIENDLY CALENDAR.

Remember when you were a child and it seemed to take forever for Christmas to come around each year? Well, now that you're all grown up, time flies. Just as the last box of ornaments is put away and the stockings are taken down, it seems like it's time to pull them all out again. This year, make it a little easier for your kids to count down the merriest month of all by creating a gift calendar with treats for the first 24 days of December.

Make It Fun

You can use any container you have around the house as a base; we filled an old sugar mold with small trinkets that we wrapped and labeled by date. Set a budget of $ 1 or less per treat for each day. (After all, this is a rather expensive time of year.) From a candy cane to a holiday-shaped cookie cutter or chocolate goody, each treat will be a fun way for families to celebrate the season.

This idea also makes a fabulous centerpiece for the breakfast room table. Dress up treats with festive ribbons or pieces of red and green raffia. Label gift tags with a day of the month for each package. If you don't have a sugar mold or some similar container, simply line the presents down the table. And remember, only one treat per day!
