A Twist on Tradition
Southern Living, Sep 2004 by Sandner, Julie Feagin
Look no further than this refreshing space for inspiring ideas for your powder room.
Trends come and go, so when it comes to renovating a bath, many people prefer to stick with classic elements. But simple doesn't mean boring. This bath is a perfect example of how to incorporate a traditional look with style.
Cyndy and Keith Cantley purchased their home with a plan in mind. The 1970s house-and especially this bath-lacked the timeless look they desired for the interiors. The tiny space was drab and dark. But as a kitchen and bath designer in Birmingham, Cyndy has a philosophy that successfully guides any update: "If you use the right pieces, you'll love it 10 years from now," she says.
Tile Style
Cyndy replaced the hardwood floors with mosaic travertine tiles. The matte surface brightens the space while adding an element of design. A creamy subway tile wainscot surrounds the room. The crackle finish gives the illusion that the tiles have been there for years.
Pristine Pedestal
The dated vanity was exchanged for a pedestal sink. The nickel-finish faucet echoes the timeless style of the piece. In a powder room, where little storage is required, a pedestal makes the perfect choice. A glass shelf, hung above the sink, provides a place for soaps and other items.
A round tilt mirror, also in nickel finish, is a sleek accent that coordinates well with the other accessories.
Finishing Touches
To create a classic look with quirky elements, look to accessories, wallpaper, or paint to add personality. Cyndy used artwork as a source of color in the room. She selected natural cork wallpaper as the backdrop for her Andy Warhol cat prints. The unusual wall covering adds an unexpected touch, bringing texture to the mix.
