Soothing Master Suite

Southern Living,  Sep 2004  by Doyle, Alice Welsh

Soft, creamy colors and a mix of plush fabrics make this bedroom a relaxing retreat.

There's a reason you never want to leave this bedroom once you have been in it-the inviting neutral hues translate into comfort and calm. It's not boring but blessed with interest everywhere you look.

Lush Materials

Fabrics are the focal point in the room. Without their prominence, it could suffer from the blahs. The pillows and benches interject a touch of whimsy with their fringe-like details. The fabrics range in color from pale cream to a light gold with several shades in between-a total of seven in all. These subtle changes in tone keep the eye moving around the room.

"Neutrals work in a bedroom because they're peaceful and soothing, but you do need interest and some balance to keep it from feeling boring or too serious," says designer Mary Margarett Nevin of Atlanta. "You should mix shiny and dull finishes, solids and patterns, and smooth and textured elements."

Black Accents Are Key

A noteworthy feature is the use of iron found in the bed frame, curtain rods, and side table. The black stands out against the soft wall color, draperies, and other elements, adding a touch of drama. The bed provides a frame for the surrounding fabrics.

Family Furnishings

The homeowners had a collection of family pieces that Mary Margarett incorporated into their bedroom. "The darker furniture makes the lighter palette pop," says Mary Margarett. The blue-and-white porcelain lamps accent the end tables without taking away from the beige-on-cream statement. It all works to create a room of stylish comfort. ALICE WELSH DOYLE
