Family Fun in The Mountains

Southern Living,  Jul 2004

At this state park, you have music, beauty, and a 1,100-acre lake. Who could ask for anything more?

You may not think of Broadway when you think of Kentucky. But you'll change your tune if you check out Jenny Wiley State Resort Park during the summer. Here the Appalachian hills are alive with the sound of musical theater.

Applause in the Appalachians

For the past 40 years, this premier state park, located two hours southeast of Lexington, has brought thousands of visitors in to see first-rate performances. This year's bill includes Peter Pan and Into the Woods, as well as My Way-A Musical Tribute to Frank Sinatra. These are in addition to the long-running outdoor drama The Legend of Jenny Wiley, which acts out the story of a young pioneer woman who was captured by Indians and escaped after a harrowing nine months.

Two special performances of Jenny Wiley Theatre-Forty Years in Review take place on July 30 and 31 to celebrate the theater's 40th anniversary. This promises to be a wonderful look at many of the musicals that have been produced here over the past four decades.

Inexpensive Stays

Because man cannot live by music alone, this popular park offers great choices for accommodations. The May Lodge has 49 rooms (starting at $65.95 per night), all overlooking the beautiful wooded acreage or the welcoming swimming pool. The dining room opens for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and menu items emphasize Kentucky favorites.

If you'd rather have a more private stay, opt for one of the cottages (starting at $99.95). For a night under the stars, select one of the 117 campground sites ($18) that await with showers, restroom facilities, and a nearby grocery store.

Outdoor Enjoyment

One of the main reasons visitors love this particular state park is the lure of Dewey Lake, a 1,100-acre treasure trove of boating and fishing.

If you're a landlubber, you'll want to explore the 13.5 miles of hiking trails throughout the park. Or try the nine-hole golf course.

Just save a little energy for some fun after-dinner entertainment in the amphitheater. You don't want to miss a touch of Broadway in the Bluegrass State.
