A kitchen worth crowing about

Southern Living,  Aug 2003  by Martin, Robert

Red and white for a kitchen? Find out how these colors make a perfect pairing.

For Doctors Wendy and John Huhn, their kitchen is about as personalized as it can get. Because their last name means "hen" in German, Wendy has spent years collecting all types of fine-feathered facsimiles-from rooster prints and cookie jars to chicken pitchers and teapots-which are showcased in this updated room.

Bold Statement

Because these poultry-inspired objects feature hues such as vivid crimsons and bright oranges, this Orlando couple's color choices were obvious. Assisting them in their kitchen makeover, designer Jennifer Haddock saw the unique collection as a reliable guideline. "I was excited about using red be-cause of its warmth and the impact it makes when placed against white cabinetry," she explains.

Jennifer found a versatile red-and-white toile fabric, which she had made into a balloon valance for above the sink and Roman shades for the adjoining breakfast room. This material inspired the striking wall color as well as the complementary patterned fabrics that cover the barstools and breakfast room chairs.

Even the wood floors were crucial in the overall color scheme. "They're stained a dark mahogany to bring out the richness of the reds and whites," Jennifer notes. The wooden farm-style breakfast table and barstools also have dark finishes for the same reason.

New Configuration

Vibrant colors aren't the only factors that make this kitchen a success; the remodeled design deserves attention as well. Made possible by PSG Construction, the Huhns' new and improved cooking space is truly the heart of their home. "The builder took out an existing wall between the adjacent family room and kitchen and removed the original peninsula counter," Wendy explains. "The combined breakfast room and kitchen creates a much better traffic flow."

Because of the fanciful collection, Wendy and John also stressed the need for cabinetry that looked good and allowed for a great deal of display. Two millwork focal points-a built-in hutch and plate rack near the sink and a larger hutch with glass-paneled upper doors along the opposite wall-anchor the space. Subtle cream-and-black granite countertops complement the decor.

So remember these thoughtful ideas. When a bold color is combined with a well-planned kitchen, the result is sure to please any family.
