Charleston by the sea
Southern Living, Aug 2003
Laden with surprises for the intrepid traveler, this South Carolina city is full of coastal charm and Southern goodness.
A vibrant testament to what's special about the South, Charleston leaves a lasting first impression.
Every year thousands of visitors stop by this seaport city to soak up some of its marshy mystique. One of the best places to experience the city is at Waterfront Park on Concord Street.
Behind the park lies historic King Street with its classic buildings, bold architecture, quaint boutiques, and good buys. Of course, familiar store brands abound on this street, but for a memento that says Charleston, head to The Charleston Gift Company.
Charleston City Market, a fabulous frenzy of shopping excitement located on nearby Market Street, is a bargaining experience. Stand elbow to elbow with savvy shoppers hunting for wares such as sterling silver jewelry, sweetgrass baskets, and other surprises.
More goodies await at Gallery Chuma. Celebrated Lowcountry artists, such as Jonathan Green and Cassandra Gillens, sell their works in this vibrant store. Their thought-provoking oil and watercolor depictions of South Carolina make wonderful gifts.
One of the best ways to discover what makes Charleston unique among other Southern cities is to take the Gullah Tour that leaves from the distinguished gallery. A guide gives visitors a glimpse into this little-known yet thriving community.
Be sure to dine at the institution known as Hyman's Seafood Company. Heart-pine floors, an open kitchen, and plates signed by all the famous folks who have feasted here make up the decor. For dinner, start with the award-winning Charleston "She" Crab Soup ($3.50 for a cup, $4.95 for a bowl). Next, move on to the best-selling Crispy Flounder ($14.95). Upon your departure from the city, you'll be counting the days until a return trip.
