Dressed-up walls

Southern Living,  Jul 2003

When it comes to decorating a blank space, think outside the box.

Guests are on the way, and your household has been refreshed. Everything looks great, except for that one blank wall.

It's not uncommon to leave certain walls unadorned, especially those in hallways or transition areas. Sometimes this is because homeowners are uncertain of what to place in those blank spots. Enhancing a bare wall with interesting objects and artifacts helps to complete the look of a home.

Think of that empty space as an opportunity, a place to add an individual touch, such as an interesting collection or unexpected pieces (architectural elements, mementos, or items that have special meaning).

"Go beyond the typical pictures-on-a-wall route; the possibilities are endless," advises Denise Jackson, a New Orleans interior designer. "Items currently in your home can provide an excellent starting point, so keep an open mind and an open eye."
