Gathering places

Southern Living,  Jun 2003  by Hamilton, Majella Chube

Long summer days invite you to linger with neighbors and friends.

Children, shrieking with glee, race their bikes up and down the street. Neighbors wave hello while engaging in energizing afternoon strolls. Melodic birds seek the perfect stage for their music fest high up in tree branches. Bold and vivid hues from heat-enduring blooms give pause and pleasurable views. Family and friends, drawn to a home's front steps, kick back for casual conversation and laughter as eager insects do a sun-drenched tango with the lawn sprinkler.

Great, immeasurable experiences come when we take full advantage of our homes' outdoors. Pleasing sensations and wonderful facets of nature intensify in this social setting, yielding collective enjoyment that stays with each of us.

Imprinted on one's heart and mind, spontaneous gatherings on warm days in the South reflect the essence and soul of summer. All that's needed is a communal spirit and an inviting space. Turn the page to discover some ideal spots.
