Creating a cozy screened porch
Southern Living, Mar 2003 by Feagin, Julie
Give an outdoor living space a new look with slipcovers and accessories.
There is hope for all the tired living room furniture out there. As an example, this Tampa porch was to be filled with uncomfortable (and, may I add, not as stylish) pool furniture, but homeowners Maureen Ayral and Darla Hutton decided to take a unique approach.
With the help of decorator Keith Bucklew, their first decision was to screen the area and create an outdoor family room. After talking to several screening companies, they found the right installation would appear seamless and not obstruct views.
Furniture With a New Look
Once the porch was complete, Maureen turned her attention to the furniture. To give the old living room upholstery a fresh look, she had slipcovers made from a water-resistant fabric. The sleek sofa and chair offer a nice alternative to traditional wicker. She also recycled the coffee table, updating the wooden tabletop by covering it with a water-resistant paint.
Another great idea Maureen implemented was to apply rust-resistant paint in a warm chocolate hue to a wrought iron table and chairs. This table anchors an area where the family can enjoy meals outside.
Adding a Touch of Light
Because ceiling fans are standard in screened porches throughout the South, Maureen opted to combine a pair of inexpensive chandeliers she found in a catalog with a ceiling fan. The elegant fixtures create a soft light above both conversation areas and contribute to the cozy atmosphere. (Tip: Consult a lighting professional before wiring decorative fixtures in exposed areas.)
Details Make the Difference
Accessories give this screened porch the look of a completed family room. From the mirror flanked by pretty plates to the decorative wall brackets, the homeowners reused many items they already had.
Plants, which add a punch of color, function almost as draperies would in an interior room. In fact, most of the plants were transplanted to decorative pots from the yard.
In Tampa's warm climate, Maureen and Darla are able to relax on their comfortable porch practically year-round. JULIE FEAGIN
GET THE LOOK
* Invest in water-resistant fabrics. The options available offer durability without sacrificing style.
* Slip-covering existing furniture is a great way to get extra mileage out of it.
* Get creative with accessories. A mirror and plates bring an unexpected surprise to an outdoor room.
* Lighting can add a magical touch, especially when you use lamps that give off a soft glow.
* Don't be afraid to incorporate colors and items thought to be only for indoors.
