True southern hospitality

Southern Living,  Nov 2002  by Zacharia, Joy E

Jane Nackashi, or "Nana" as she's best known, shares cherished recipes with her family and friends.

Talk to Jane Nackashi, or "Nana," and she'll say, "You're never too old to ask questions." Although she's been cooking for many, many years, Nana says she's still learning about food. Nana, daughter Betty Trail, and granddaughter Denise Trail Wartan share a common denominator-a tremendous love for family, dear friends, traditions, and delicious food.

Betty says what she loves most about the South is the slower, friendlier way of life. "Southerners are a nurturing people who enjoy sharing good food," she says. This Southern family has a special talent for making folks feel right at home with their warm, welcoming ways and fabulous recipes. Friends new and old often request (and sometimes beg) Nana to make specialties from her homeland of Iraq. Treasured dishes include Roasted Leg of Lamb With Port, Buttery Rice With Vermicelli, homemade Tangy Yogurt, and others that we're happy to share with you here.

Thanks to Nana's devotion to family, tradition, and love of cooking, future generations such as great-granddaughters Nora and Madeline will also learn to prepare these tasty, holiday-worthy recipes.
