Luxury in Little Rock

Southern Living,  Oct 2002

The posh Peabody has added Arkansas' capital to its flock of elegant hotels.

Although Memphis is the forebear of definitive Peabody style, Little Rock may now add its name to those cities with one of the distinguished hotel properties (the third is Orlando). Located downtown and within walking distance of the Old State House and the River Market, The Peabody makes an ideal lodging choice for guests wanting to explore the city's history and heritage.

All three Peabodys are designed with distinct interior looks. Orlando is tropical and Memphis, of course, has a classic feel. At the Little Rock location, you'll find contemporary decor and timeless style. Local artisans were commissioned for much of the work. The more than 400 newly renovated guestrooms are spacious, decorated in warm golds and greens, and made for comfort.

Outfitted in rich reds, browns, and golds, the lobby is the place to be on weekdays. From 3 to 4 p.m., it is teatime at The Peabody. Guests enjoy traditional English-style tea served with a choice of scones, petits fours, and pastries.

For dining, the in-house restaurant, Capriccio, celebrates the food of Tuscany and Northern Italy. Try the signature Shrimp Cantalini for $25.

The hotel service rolls out the red carpet not only for guests, but also for their feathered friends. The famous Peabody ducks march daily at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. to the sounds of John Philip Sousa's "King Cotton March" before retreating to their rooftop suite. And you don't have to be staying at the hotel to watch. (Make sure you get there early for a good view. Folks start lining up for the parade 30 minutes ahead of time.)

So whether it's for business or relaxation, duck into The Peabody Little Rock for a pheasant, uh, pleasant time.

The Peabody Little Rock: 3 Statehouse Plaza, Little Rock, AR 72201; (501) 375-5000, 1-800-527-1745, or www.peabodylittlerock.com. Rates: start at $189, but package deals are available year-round.
