Hidden step stool

Southern Living,  Sep 2002

If you have young children around the house, here's an idea to help them reach the sink.

A downstairs bath, designed for guests, often becomes the most frequently used one in the house, especially when there are children around. Homeowners Karen and Dru Adams of Richmond anticipated that reality and installed a powder room vanity that includes a clever pullout step just for the young ones.

Their daughters-Sarah, age 5, and Olivia, age 3-can slide out the step and stand on it to reach the sink. The design eliminates the need for a cumbersome step stool and keeps the powder room uncluttered for guests. It would work in any bath used by young family members. The couple designed the vanity and had a local cabinetmaker build it to their specifications. The piece's elegant lines make it resemble a piece of furniture. With a granite countertop and beautiful detailing, the vanity hides its utilitarian side in style.
