Cool off in the courtyard
Southern Living, Jul 2002 by Martin, Robert
For this Baton Rouge family, all paths lead to their relaxing side-yard oasis.
Somewhere during the course of time, people who lived in hot climates discovered the refreshing qualities of a courtyard pool. Cathy and Frank Tomeny are certainly aware of this. Their new home, situated across a lake from the Louisiana State University campus, incorporates a pool and many other tried-and-true features geared to provide relief from Baton Rouge's humid summers.
Traditional Influences
Faced with a deep but narrow lot, Frank and Cathy wanted a home that not only maximizes views of the lake but also accommodates growing space for their three children. These needs evolved into an L-- shaped plan that captures passing breezes and cradles a side courtyard.
Reminiscent of a classic Charleston single house, the narrow end of the Tomeny residence faces the street and lake beyond. The front entrance, positioned to one side, leads into an arched gallery. This lower outdoor space and an upper sleeping porch link the house to the courtyard. Architects Chris and Trula Remson helped Cathy and Frank create a look that belongs on the bayou. "The broad porches, deep roof overhangs, and lush courtyard define this home as Louisiana born," Trula points out.
Built for the Lake
In keeping with the climate, the homeowners also emphasized the use of durable materials. "Because stucco ages beautifully and is practically maintenance free, we chose it as the primary exterior finish," Trula explains. At some locations, brick complements the stucco and adds to the sense of permanence. For the roofs, slate shingles introduce more long-lasting appeal, while the bluestone paving in the courtyard below continues this muted and timeless color palette. Even the louvers and shutters that enhance the exterior are made of redwood, which resists decay.
A Hidden Oasis
The Tomenys' courtyard remains one of the best-kept secrets in Baton Rouge. Surrounded by concrete walls manufactured to resemble limestone, this retreat is enlivened by a well-used swimming pool. Ground floor rooms facing the area also feature French doors, which easily access the space. Trula adds, "The relationship of the pool and courtyard to the house's interiors allows the courtyard to function as an extension of the living space."
Plus, it's simply a great place for entertaining. On evenings when the weather's nice, Frank and Cathy keep the series of French doors open, allowing guests to move freely into the gallery and courtyard. This concealed spot takes on yet another role-it's the perfect party favor.
