Soften a wall
Southern Living, Mar 2002
This chimney just stuck out into the new courtyard and looked blank and boring. To fix that, the Corneas planted a pyracantha shrub in front of it to espalier up the wall. They tacked concrete nails into the seams of the brick and used thin wire to pull limbs snug. A friend built the bench as a housewarming gift. It serves as a great place to sit and rest.
Pyracantha is an evergreen shrub that produces colorful winter berries. Its sprawling form and multi-season interest make it a classic plant to espalier.
What once was a blank wall is now covered with green foliage. You hardly notice the brick structure, especially with your back to it, as you sit on the comfortable bench placed strategically in the Cometts' new landscape.
