Reinhart gives $3 million to Gundersen

La Crosse Tribune,  Jun 14, 2005

Local businesswoman and philanthropist Marge Reinhart recently donated $3 million to the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation to underwrite the costs of the new stereotactic radiosurgery equipment.

The donation was announced Monday by Dr. Mark V. Connelly, foundation chairman.

Stereotactic radiosurgery delivers highly focused doses of radiation to a target with minimal effects on healthy organs And tissue nearby.

Gundersen Lutheran officials said fewer than 100 sites worldwide have SRS treatment systems. They said Gundersen Lutheran is the only facility in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa equipped for stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy with image-guided patient positioning by BrainLAB, a leader in minimally invasive therapies and cancer treatments.

SRS has been available at Gundersen Lutheran since December 2004 through the collaboration of neurosurgery and radiation oncology. The technology delivers precise high doses of radiation to formerly inoperable brain and spine tumors. The procedure requires no incision. Work is proceeding to extend this technology to treat tumors involving other organs, such as the lungs and liver.
