Robert N. Stern, Professor in the New York State School of Industrial Relations at Cornell University and Book Review Editor of the Administrative Science Quarterly, died on April 21, 2001 of complications from diabetes. When began work as Managing Editor in December 1980, Bob had already published his first article in ASQ and was a member of the Editorial Board, serving through December 1982. He served as Book Review Editor from March 1986 to March 1988 and again from December 1997 to the present. Because review copies of books are delivered to the ASO office, Bob came often to sort through and assign them to reviewers. Through this regular contact over the years, I came to know him and to appreciate his dry humor, incisive intellect, and wise advice. Besides being a terrific book review editor and an important member of our editorial team, Bob was also a dedicated scholar and a mentor to his students. He made many close friends across the globe in his nearly 53 years on the planet, and we will all miss him very much.
