Stonehill & Taylor Architects, a Soho-based firm specializing in hospitality, medical and education, has hired Michael Suomi as director of interior design and marketing.
Suomi is a seven-time award recipient for his design of hotels, restaurants, hospitals and corporate interiors. He is credited for such New York projects as the W Union Square Hotel; McCann Erickson Advertising's world headquarters; The Alex Hotel; Geisha Restaurant and Sushi Bar; and The Carl Sagan Discovery Center's Children's Hospital. He also served as a charette leader for the Imagine New York: Municipal Art Society Visioning Team for New York City's World Trade Center site redevelopment.
"Mike Suorni is an accomplished interior designer, whose cutting-edge approach has captured the attention of his peers and landed him numerous awards," said Paul Taylor, managing partner, Stonehill & Taylor. "He is a dynamic addition to our team."
Suomi has worked in the industry for 18 years. Prior to joining Stonehill & Taylor, he was the principal of MacEwen + Suomi, Architecture and Design, with offices in New York and Chicago. He also was a senior associate and studio leader at Rockwell Architecture, Planning and Design. Before moving to New York, he spent eight years serving as director of architecture for Chicago-based Jordan Mozer and Associates. Today, Suomi's work can be seen throughout the country.
In addition to his architectural contributions, Suomi has been editor of Dimensions Magazine, taught design and was a guest critic at Ohio State, University of Michigan, and Chicago's Art Institute.
Suomi holds a bachelor of science degree in architecture and masters of architecture from the University of Michigan. He also studied computer engineering and fine art.
