Wines & Vines, March, 2000 by Philip E. Hiaring
Those prone to worry that all white wines taste like Chardonnay needn't sweat it with the 1998 Viognier (Special Collection) from Callaway Vineyard & Winery. Wow...14.5% again! Could this be as good as at, say, 12.5%? At least it wouldn't make you do a face down in the old salad. We asked the staff to guess el precio (price) and two came pretty darn close: it's $16, and I believe that's cheaper than most of the California versions of this Rhone cultivar.
Oh, and guess what else? It wasn't aged in oak! That's why you could find honeysuckle/jasmine aromas in the wine! Drink young as an aperitif. Tasted with staff 12/99.
