NBWA joins forces on seatbelt program

The National Beer Wholesalers Assn. announced it has accepted an invitation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to participate in an initiative to increase seatbelt usage, according to NBWA president Ron Sarasin.

Entitled "70% by '92 Buckle Up Program," the project is designed to achieve President Bush's goal of 70-percent seatbelt usage by 1992. In a letter extending the invitation for NBWA's participation, NHTSA administrator Jerry Curry said his agency planned to implement a series of national press events to increase public awareness of the campaign.

"Our participation is not just in name only," Sarasin reported. "NBWA has completed filming a public service announcement with Cindi Lamb, our new Health and Education Adviser, promoting seatbelt usage. Our members are on the roads, too, and just as concerned with safe driving practices.

"Their efforts," Sarasin continued, "through membership in the NBWA and on a local level, prove the saying, |we are part of the solution,' is action not just words."

In addition to the seatbelt PSA, filming has also been completed on three anti-drunk driving ads. Sarasin said the PSAs would be ready for distribution in May.
