Modern Brewery Age, Jan 16, 2006
The Lakefront Brewery of Milwaukee, WI, has developed a new gluten-free beer for consumers with celiac disease, a disorder that prevents people from digesting gluten, a protein found in wheat and barley.
The beer, called New Grist, is aimed at the millions of consumers who suffer from celiac. It is brewed with sorghum.
Some beer-like products have been produced for the celiac community, but none have an especially beer-like taste.
Lakefront says that New Grist is the first actual beer to be brewed in the U.S. without gluten-containing grains.
"We're glad New Grist makes it possible for people with celiac disease to finally have a beer," Russ Klisch, president of Lakefront said in a release. "I'm very pleased with the initial requests and compliments for this product that have been pouring in from around the country."
The beer will be sold nationally.
