A book titled "Treating Gout While Still Drinking Beer," has become a best-seller in Japan. Mainichi Shimbun reports that the author, Dr. Mitsuhiro Osame, used himself as an test subject after he developed gout. Gout is caused by drinking and eating too much, and beer is seen as a major culprit.
Osame says by studying himself during periods of abstinence alternating with periods of drinking and determined he could continue to drink beer as long as he limited himself about three cups of beer daily. His prescription: "Determine what your body can handle and then stay within limits."
The book has proven popular among Japanese salarymen, who engage in extensive social drinking and dining, and often develop gout in their 30s.
