Shipyard's Brewer's Choice

Modern Brewery Age,  Jan 24, 2005

The Shipyard Brewing Company has announced a new annual tradition, the production of a Brewer's Choice Special Ale. Each year, Brewer's Choice will feature a new, limited edition beer recipe created by Shipyard's brew house. In 2005, the Brewer's Choice will be a brown ale, available in February and March "Brewer's Choice honors the true spirit of brewing excellence and carries on the age-old tradition of great beer making," noted Shipyard master brewer Alan Pugsley.

"It gives our brewers the opportunity to develop creative new recipes to bring to the marketplace." Pugsley said this brew was a toast to his mentor, Peter Austin, who founded the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England where Pugsley apprenticed. The packaging features a line art drawing of Austin at ease in the brew house making a toast to his fellow brewers. "People will no doubt wonder about the black cat sitting on the barrel next to him," continued Pugsley. "In England, black cats are a symbol of good luck and Peter had a lucky brew house cat named Bridget who greeted us every morning when we came into work." This year, Shipyard will brew a limited 10,000 case run of Brewer's Choice. This beer will be distributed primarily in New England in 6- and 12-packs and on draft. The 2005 Brown Ale is described as "a full-bodied, dark brown ale" made with 5 different malts and three hop varieties, with 5.4% a.b.v.
