Clarion goes beyond the bells and whistles with new unit
Mobile Phone News, Feb 27, 1992
NEW ORLEANS, La. - Just when the mobile communications industry thought the bell and whistle stage of cellular phone development had reached its peak, Clarion introduced a car unit that integrates a cellular phone. AM/FM radio and compact disk (CD) player into one system. Combining five years of cellular experience with 50 years of mobile electronics business experience, Clarion has brought to the consumer market the CAL-1000 integrated unit.
"This product was a natural evolution for us," said Larry Carpenter, vice president of sales for Clarion. "We are able to combine both [electronic and cellular] expertise and provide a distinct advantage to the consumer looking to simplify his life, by combining all these components into one system."
The new system has a plethora of state-of-the-art features including: an optional Voice Command Module which operates all three unit functions; a Selectable Anti-Theft Code which automatically calls the owner if there is a theft attempt; and a separate cordless-cellular phone handset which doubles as an infrared remote control for the radio, CD and cellular phone.
The cellular phone section of the CAL-1000 has all the high-end features found on Clarion's advanced line of cellular phones. These include: hands-free full duplex operation; 100 number speed dial memory; five last number stack memory and alpha-numeric speed dialing. The unit also plays CD music in the background during the talk mode or while someone is on hold.
Featuring hands-free operation, the cellular phone can be used with a small microphone placed in the car's visor while the called party's voice is broadcasted through the car's stereo system. The phone also can be operated traditionally with the handset. The handset, which rests in a recharging cradle near the driver, doubles as a remote control for the entire system. The Selectable Anti-Theft Code is operated by the owner entering the phone number of where he can be reached while away from the vehicle. If the phone is tampered with, the unit automatically calls the pre-programmed number to alert the owner.
Also, with the addition of the VCM-1000 voice command module, the radio, CD and cellular functions can be operated with a series of specific voice commands.
