Drug Store News, August 20, 2001
JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- George Hilden, a pioneer of chain drug retailing and a valued mentor to generations of merchants and supplier industry leaders, has died at the age of 90.
Hilden made his mark in 1936 as one of the founders and a chairman of Osco Drug (Owners Service Co.), which was later acquired by American Stores. He served two terms as chairman of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores in the early 1970s, and remained an active member through 2001 and a familiar face at meetings.
Hilden also served with Skaggs, PayLess Drug Stores and Jewel Osco. After his retirement, he became a consultant for Hallmark Cards.
"My whole career has been built on a basis of trust in my fellow man--trust in a handshake," Hilden said at a ceremony marking 25 years with Hallmark.
NACDS president Craig Fuller called Hilden's passing "a tremendous loss to the chain pharmacy industry."
"For over 60 years, those in both the retailer and supplier ranks have benefited from his wisdom, counsel, encouragement and optimism," Fuller noted. "His sense of professionalism and trust in fellow man were the hallmarks of George's approach to life."
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions and messages may be sent to the George T. Hilden Scholarship Fund, c/o NACDS Education Foundation, 4.13 North Lee Street, Alexandria, Va., 22314-2347. Notes of personal condolence will be forwarded by NACDS to the Hilden family.
