Stop & Shop combines Speedpass, loyalty card

QUINCY, Mass. -- In a first at retail, Ahold's Stop & Shop division will begin testing Exxon Mobile's Speedpass payment and identity system in a handful of its stores starting this fall. Stop & Shop intends to incorporate its existing loyalty card program information into the Speedpass system.

Stop & Shop currently has 3 million loyalty cardholders. Spokeswoman Kelly O' Connor noted, "This will allow our customers to swipe their Speedpass and still receive all the benefits of their loyalty card."

O'Connor said no final decisions have been made as to how many stores will be in the test, where those stores will be located, or if, and how, Stop & Shop will advertise the new program.
