NYC councilman seeks to ease calorie posting law

Nation's Restaurant News,  Feb 19, 2007

New York -- City Council members here were considering whether to relax a regulation approved last year by the health department and set to take effect July 1 that would require restaurants already disclosing calorie contents on brochures, food wrappers, tray liners or websites to also post that data directly on menus and menu boards.

The council was expected to consider an alternative proposal from councilman Joel Rivera, D-Bronx, who chairs its health committee, that reportedly would permit calorie contents to be posted on less-prominent posters or in brochures.

Proponents of the alternative measure also want to extend tax credits worth several thousand dollars over two years to previously nondisclosing operators that voluntarily post calorie data.
