Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedBurger king poised to test various trans-fat-free oils
Nation's Restaurant News, Feb 12, 2007
MIAMI -- Burger King has disclosed its readiness to begin testing "a few" trans-fat-free frying oils in its restaurants, which the chain had indicated late last year that it was planning to do.
The announcement that testing was imminent came two days after McDonald's said its five-year hunt for a reduced-trans-fat oil had ended with the selection of a frying medium for a pending nationwide rollout.
Burger King said its tests would lead to a domestic rollout by late 2008.
A McDonald's spokesman, stressing that its rollout timetable was indefinite, disputed a report in the Chicago Tribune stating that the chain's systemwide oil change would be completed by early 2008.
John Schaufelberger, vice president of product marketing and innovation for BK franchisor Burger King Holdings Inc., said his chain would comply with the restriction on trans fats in restaurant food that takes effect July 1 in New York City, echoing the same vow by McDonald's.
