GREENWOOD VILLAGE, COLO. -- Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, based here, recently awarded 89 employees each with $1,000 scholarships to apply to education-related expenses, such as tuition reimbursement, living expenses, books, matriculation fees or self-development.
Team members wrote essays describing how the scholarship would further their education. General managers selected winners based on the merit of the essays.
Since 2002, the 345-plus-unit casual-dining chain has provided $611,000 in scholarships to 617 employees.
Red Robin's president and chief executive, Eric Houseman, credited the scholarship program with helping to retain employees.
