PINEHURST, N.C. -- More than 70 restaurant industry leaders headed to Pinehurst Resort for the National Restaurant Association's 11th annual Richard E. Marriott SAFE Golf Invitational last fall. The event helped raise $400,000 for the Save American Free Enterprise, or SAFE, fund, nearly doubling the amount raised at the 2006 event.

"We were thrilled with the success of the 2007 SAFE Golf Invitational," said Richard E. Marriott of Host Hotels & Resorts.

Formerly known as the "SAFE Pinehurst Golf Invitational," the event was renamed this year to honor Marriott, the honorary event chairman, for his longstanding support as founder and chair of the SAFE Invitational.

SAFE is the NRA's fund dedicated to financing political efforts at the state level, in cooperation with state restaurant associations.

Golfers enjoyed a variety of courses at the resort, including Pinehurst # 2, site of the 2005 U.S. Open.
