S.F. smog regulators vote for broiler emission limits

Nation's Restaurant News,  Dec 17, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO -- The board of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has voted to require emission controls on the charbroilers of restaurants that cook high volumes of beef.

Beginning in January 2009, quick-service restaurants with chain-driven conveyor broilers would require emission controls if they cook 400 pounds of beef per week. The regulation would apply to all the region's restaurants with open, slotted charbroilers that cook 800 pounds of beef per week, beginning in 2013.

Regulators were quoted as saying the controls would reduce public exposure to fine soot particles that can cause respiratory problems.

The move, however, was strongly opposed by the California Restaurant Association.
