Firefighters, chefs clash and heat up Iron Skillet charity bash

Nation's Restaurant News,  Nov 19, 2007  by Michael Dempsey

NEW YORK -- Firefighter Jeffrey Scotto of Brooklyn's Engine 246 beat out some of this city's professional chefs to capture top prize at the sixth annual World Cares Center's Iron Skillet Cook-Off held recently at Slate restaurant and lounge here.

The event, which pits New York City chefs against firefighters from all five boroughs in a cooking competition, drew 500 guests and raised more than $100,000 for nonprofit group World Cares Center, which provides disaster preparedness education and support services.

Scotto won with his walnut rib eye with escarole. Sue Torres, chef-owner of Suenos, placed second with her tuna dish with tortilla chips, avocado sauce and black beans. Manhattan firefighter Andres Flores nabbed third place with his shrimp ceviche.

Judges included New York Giants player Jared Lorenzen, Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer and radio host Christine Nagy.
