SAN FRANCISCO -- City vehicles here will be fueled in part by used grease from local restaurants under a new GreaseCycle program launched by the municipal Public Utilities Commission.
Commission officials hope to expand the $1.3 million program to include all of San Francisco's estimated 2,600 foodservice establishments.
Under a contract with Bio Solar Group, the program initially is collecting grease from more than 50 participating restaurants and will convert it into a fuel blend that would be 20 percent biodiesel and 80 percent diesel.
The restaurants are provided receptacles ranging in size from 5 gallons to 55 gallons to store the grease, which is picked up for free as often as needed. The program is expected to grow in phases with the goal of converting 50,000 gallons of recycled grease per month.
