Petty thief gets arrested for alleged doughnut rip-off

Nation's Restaurant News,  Oct 29, 2007  by Elissa Elan

FARMINGTON, MO. -- One might assume big-ticket items are top-of-the-list things to shoplift from a retail store, but a local man here recently proved the item of choice ought to be, well, doughnuts.

According to a report in the St. Louis Dispatch, Scott Masters, 41, allegedly stole a doughnut from the Country Mart store, but not before reportedly shoving an employee out of his way while trying to make off with the 52-cent sweet treat. The employee was not hurt.

Masters, who is known as a ne'er-do-well in Farmington, had been arrested many times before the doughnut caper occurred.

As a result, if convicted, Masters could end up in prison for up to 15 years. The prosecutor of the case said that because of Masters' prior record, he could receive a sentence of 30 years to life.

"That someone would take just a single doughnut, not something very expensive or extravagant, that's unique," said Gary Komar, Country Mart's assistant manager.

According to police chief Rick Baker, "It's not the doughnut, it's the assault."

Said Masters: "I can't believe this crap."
