Hotel tips hat to late Queen Mother with revival of egg dish

Nation's Restaurant News,  June 11, 2007  by Elissa Elan

LONDON -- Britain's late Queen Mother is making a return of sorts, or at least her favorite food is, at one of her best-loved restaurants here.

Whenever the beloved royal dined at the restaurant in the Goring Hotel, she'd usually order the same thing: Eggs Drumbiko, a dish made from chopped eggs, prawns, tomatoes and mayonnaise in a sherry-flavored jelly.

In fact, she loved the item so much that she'd serve it at picnics when visiting her Scottish home, Castle of Mey.

The Royal Household stopped serving the dish after the Queen Mother died in 2002, and the restaurant followed suit shortly afterward. But the eatery was asked to bring it back for a special party commemorating the opening of the castle's new visitors center, the Associated Press reported.

These days, however, the dish features lobster instead of prawns.

"It is very popular," a hotel source told the AP. "It's our quiet little nod to the Windsors."
