Judge dismisses transfat complaint vs. KFC

Nation's Restaurant News,  May 21, 2007

WASHINGTON -- A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed last year against KFC for failing to warn customers that its frying oil contained artificial trans fats, a known contributor to cardiovascular disease.

U.S. District Judge James Robertson said plaintiff Arthur Hoyte did not prove that he was harmed by eating KFC's food. Both the KFC and Taco Bell arms of Louisville, Ky.-based Yum! Brands Inc. announced after Hoyte's lawsuit was filed that they would switch to nonhydrogenated frying oils with zero grams of trans fat.

KFC this month launched a multimedia ad campaign touting the completion of its switch to a trans-fat-free soybean oil in its 5,500 U.S. restaurants. Taco Bell's choice for its 4,200 domestic units was a new canola oil.
