Allied Domecq, Whitbread in acquisition talks

LONDON -- Allied Domecq PLC said it is in preliminary discussions that may lead to Whitbread PLC's acquiring Allied's U.K. retailing business, a deal reportedly worth $3.7 billion.

The move would include Allied's 3,544 British pubs, its 50-percent share in the First Quench drinks store operated under a joint venture with Whitbread and its 25-percent stake in Britannia, which owns soft-drink concern Britvic.
