Mass. lawmaker drafts bill to ban restaurant trans fat

Nation's Restaurant News,  Jan 1, 2007

BOSTON -- Massachusetts would ban artificial trans fats in restaurants if lawmakers here pass a bill introduced Dec. 19 by state Rep. Peter Koutoujian, D-Waltham.

Koutoujian, who is House chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Health, said he was influenced by trans-fat limits recently approved by New York City's health authorities. Lawmakers and officials in such jurisdictions as Chicago; Boston; Seattle; Louisville, Ky.; Washington, D.C.; Nassau County, N.Y.; Maine; and New Jersey have said they would consider similarly structured bans this year.
