Calif. lawmaker proposes statewide ban on trans fats

Nation's Restaurant News,  Jan 1, 2007

SACRAMENTO, CALIF. -- California Assemblywoman Bonnie Garcia has introduced legislation aiming to ban artificial trans fats in foodservice establishments statewide. The bill is similar to the ban recently passed in New York City.

Garcia, a Republican, said the measure was designed to be a "starting point" in discussions about statewide implementation.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors recently asked public health officials there to evaluate the impact of a possible ban on trans fats in restaurants. The county's Department of Public Health is expected to issue a report to the supervisors on the regulation of trans fats later this month that would also consider whether fast-food restaurants should be required to state all items' calorie content and other nutrition data on their menus.
