NEW YORK -- Encouraging future talent and saluting past achievement, the BCA's 14th annual Cultural Awareness Salute bridged the future with the past by showcasing the talents of career-dedicated culinary students while applauding the career accomplishments of industry leaders.
The annual black-tie affair at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, titled "Different Cultures, One Direction," drew 400 attendees who enjoyed multicourse, fine-dining cuisine prepared by the evening's culinary stars, students from some top culinary schools.
Recipients of the BCA's awards for lifetime contribution to the foodservice industry and mentoring were as follows:
* Chef and author Daisy Martinez, of PBS program "Daisy Cooks!," who earned the Jefferson Evans Award, which was named after the first black graduate of The Culinary Institute of America and was created to recognize culinary excellence.
* Nathaniel Goldston III, chairman and chief executive officer of Gourmet Services Inc., recipient of the Heritage Award, for lifelong dedication to the hospitality industry.
* Chef and author Jeffrey Henderson, executive chef of Cafe Bellagio, Las Vegas, recipient of the James Lewis Award, named after the longtime corporate chef at Restaurant Associates.
* H. Joseph Machicote, vice president and ombudsman of Compass Group North America, recipient of the Lifetime Ambassador Award, for generous support and guidance of the BCA's mission.
