Size matters: Pizza Hut, Domino's trade PR barbs

Nation's Restaurant News,  April 28, 2008

DALLAS -- The struggling Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza chains debated each other's measurements in dueling press releases this month as Pizza Hut pushed its Pizza Mia deal of three or more one-topping pizzas for $5 each, while Domino's new 444 Deal pitched four one-topping pies for $4 each.

Pizza Hut's media release asserted that the segment leader's 12-inch Pizza Mia pies give a total of 44 percent more pizza than the four 10-inch pizzas in Domino's deal.

Domino's fired back the same afternoon with a release whose headline asked: "Does the Hut have pizza envy?" The category's No. 2 chain claimed that each of its 444 Deal pizzas has 25 pepperoni slices, versus 20 on each Pizza Mia.
