GLENDALE, CALIF. -- IHOP has launched a national contest to kick off its 50th birthday celebration and will award the grand-prize winner free pancakes for life.

The "It Happens at IHOP" contest allows diners to submit stories about heartwarming, unexpected or humorous events they have experienced at an IHOP restaurant.

The grandprize winner will receive one free short stack of pancakes a week for 20 years and a trip for two to New York to attend IHOP's birthday celebration July 7. Five runners-up each will receive $100 IHOP gift cards. The promotion will run through May 31.

IHOP first opened in Toluca Lake, Calif., in 1958 and now has 1,344 domestic and foreign units.
