Smithfield commits to environmental initiative

Nation's Restaurant News,  March 19, 2007

SMITHFIELD, VA. -- Smithfield Foods said it has made a commitment to join the Chicago Climate Exchange, North America's only voluntary, legally binding greenhouse gas emissions reduction, registry and trading program. Smithfield said it would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions in the United States by 6 percent by the year 2010.

"Our commitment to the Chicago Climate Exchange provides us with a tremendous opportunity to have a long-lasting, positive impact on the environment by further reducing our environmental footprint," said Dennis Treacy, Smithfield's vice president of environmental and corporate affairs.
